GREY

The colour grey has been reigning supreme across all areas of interiors for quite some time now and it is showing no signs of going anywhere. For some, grey is too clinical looking and on a par with beige for blandness yet for the vast majority, grey remains “the only” colour when it comes to their homes. Regardless of what camp you are in, (floor to ceiling grey or more colour than a packet of skittles), there are plenty of reasons why grey has the staying power and why we believe it can be embraced by anyone no matter their tastes or preferred colour palette.

Versatile

With over 500 shades available there are so many options when it comes to using grey in your home, whether you go multi-tonal throughout, keep things light and airy or use darker shades for a cosier atmosphere. Being in between black and white, grey is the most versatile neutral offering a calming alternative to the starkness of either light or dark. It is a great accompaniment to other neutrals too like beige, cream or taupe which is why grey flooring for example compliments wooden furniture so well.

Supporting Colour

Due to it’s neutrality, grey as a back drop makes the use of other colours really stand out. It pairs particularly well with pastels which is why mid to light greys and pastel pinks are often seen together, similarly brighter, more vibrant colours like yellows and oranges really pop against a slate/charcoal grey. Even if you are really into colour, grey can actually be incorporated into your designs to help enhance your more colourful pieces, whether this is a bright cushion on a grey sofa or brightly painted walls against grey floors, grey is a great supporting colour which won’t steal the show. Similarly, if you have some furniture or a picture for example that you want to be the focal point in a room then grey and its trademark neutrality is a great way to help this be achieved.

Enduring

As well as being the top colour choice for many in general, grey is also synonymous with specific interiors trends which has further contributed to its mass appeal and longevity, (we are happy about anything that reduces the need to redecorate too often!). It is particularly associated with Scandinavian (Scandi) style, where the focus is on quality design and clean lines in a minimalist and simplistic setting which grey, and its many shades, really compliments. Not that we know what the next interiors trend or theme will be we are sure that grey will make an appearance in there somewhere making it hard to avoid.

Don’t be grey about grey

From what we can tell from helping our customers choose their new flooring, grey is still the clear winner in colour palettes. If you prefer to live life in colour hopefully this article has helped sell you on some of the benefits of incorporating grey into your home.
